Adolescence is a strange period that involves constant ups and down in a teenager’s life. It is a phase where life seems uncertain. Adolescents have tension and anxiety related to the future and career and go through various psychological changes too. Teenagers indulge in various activities that can be eventually harmful and at certain times can land them in unhealthy circumstances. The major behavioral problems are often due to neglect by parents, academic pressure and many more factors. Some of the problems include –
This is an activity where teenagers harm themselves by using numerous methods. It might include using a blade to cut themselves, starving themselves, or hitting themselves. These activities take a toll on the mental health of the individual and have negative side effects.
An adolescent is usually involved in this because of persistent peer pressure, if an individual’s circle of friends is engaging in drugs, she/he is more likely to be forced into doing this. They find it is a way to look fashionable in the modern era.
To meet the society’s expectation of an ‘ideal’ weight, teenagers force themselves to limit their consumption of food. There are various types of disorders like anorexia (starving oneself), and bulimia (inducing vomiting after eating). This is most commonly found among girls in urban areas. These days media projects a slim body as the most desirable weight which provokes a teenager to reduce their weight.
Due to constant pressure from society, they fall into depression at a very tender age. At the age which is meant to learn new things and try adventures, they end up taking anti-depressant pills and having therapies. Parents should have a keen role in focusing on the mental health of their children. They should try to identify the problem that their child is facing and have a healthy conversation with their child. This would definitely reduce the number of problems that the teenagers face and would lead them to the path of success.
Eventually, we come to finding solutions for these problems, but these problems will not get solved overnight.
There are a few ways which can help the teenagers fight these problems
TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR HEALTH
This is the most important step in maintaining good mental health, eating healthy and staying hydrated gives mind a fresh feeling and capable of doing various activities. Having good health also combats various potential diseases.
PARENTS SHOULD TAKE CARE
It is also the responsibility of parents to look after their teenagers and give them the proper care and support that they need. If teenagers have their parent’s backs and guidance, they will have no problem in fighting these problems.
MAKE FRIENDS WITH OTHER PEOPLE
There is no doubt that no human being can live alone for their entire lives, loneliness always causes negative approaches and health issues in life. Therefore, it is important to have good relationships with non-toxic people.
FIND A NEW HOBBY
Having a new skill to learn actively involves the mind and helps it overcome these problems. Hobbies like painting, reading, learning a new language, gardening, hiking, etc. can be done. It will give a sense of enjoyment and healthy learning.
TAKE A BREAK
In this fast-paced and stressful life, it is completely fine to take a break and give time to your mental health. Listen to what your body is trying to speak to you. The academic grades, the workloads and assignments all can wait, but don’t ever let them conquer your mental health.
We all are worth more than what we think we are, it just takes a little effort to see within ourselves. Do not make this life so hard on you, enjoy the little things, appreciate the gratitude, surround yourself with positive people and most importantly LOVE YOURSELF.
